Call on Congress

On July 16th, 1945, the United States exploded the first nuclear weapon in New Mexico. On August 6th and 9th, 1945, the United States dropped Nuclear Weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Hundreds of thousands of people around the world have been killed and maimed by the existence of these weapons. Generational harms and nuclear related illnesses continue to be passed on.

For 80 years, the threat of nuclear armageddon has been hanging over our heads, and a new nuclear arms race is blossoming.  Now is the time for congress to speak out on this.  And they have the perfect opportunity!

On Wednesday, July 23rd, Representative McGovern of Massachusetts, will host a Special Order Hour following legislative business, inviting congresspersons to share their concerns about the state of nuclear weapons, lack of international diplomacy on the matter, increasing budgets given to nuclear weapons programs, and the 80 year anniversary of the nuclear age that began right here in the United States.

Call your representative between now and the 23rd and urge them to participate in this event.

Search your representative on congress.gov to find their phone number, or call the Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121

Hello, my name is [name]. I am a constituent from [town/city, state].  I am calling to ask that [Representative X] participate in an upcoming opportunity to speak on nuclear disarmament.

Rep. Jim McGovern’s office is organizing a special order on nuclear weapons on July 23rd. I want to urge the Representative to speak at this event.

This summer marks 80 years of living under the threat of nuclear armageddon, and 80 years of lasting harm. It is crucial to speak out at this time especially in light of the growing nuclear tensions around the world. The United States spends more money than the rest of the world combined on our nuclear weapons. We must end nuclear weapons before they end us.

Please join this event with Rep. McGovern and speak out on this issue.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN EVENT FOR THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ONLY. SENATORS CANNOT PARTICIPATE.

The Special Order will be livestreamed from the house floor: https://live.house.gov late afternoon on the 23rd so keep your eye out, and ask your representative to attend!
